The Long War
by Laurie Lee
Less passionate the long war throws
its burning thorn about all men,
caught in one grief, we share one wound,
and cry one dialect of pain.
We have forgot who fired the house
Whose easy mischief spilled first blood
Under one raging roof we lie
The fault no longer understood
But as our twisted arms embrace the desert where our cities stood
Death’s family likeness in each face must show at last our brotherhood
And I found this comment:
This poems seems horribly ironic since the Pentagon have unveiled their new 'Long War' strategy. £295.6 billion for US defence spending in 2007. Or enough to fund global anti-hunger efforts for the next twelve years. http://costofwar.com/index-world-hu nger.html
NO COMMENTS from me...
I've read that the poem is a song of the relatively new Italian band London Underground (debut album in 2000),a trio led by the drummer/vocalist Daniele Caputo who is also known for his work with one of best modern prog bands about STANDARTE:
Line-up/Musicians
- Daniele Caputo / drums, percussion, vocal
- Marco Piaggesi / bass, banjo, backing vocal
- Gianluca Gerlini / piano, Hammond, organ, Moog, clavinet, Mellotron
Additional musicians:
- Claudio Bianchini / pedal steel guitar
- Stefano Cudia / guitar
- Gianni Corongiu / guitar
- Sergio Taglioni / string arrangement
Unfortunately I haven't yet found out much more about them - I'll go to SATURN next week

(You think those kids are different in Australia? Should you find it to be so, send me a note and an application form :-). I found them to be exactly the same in both Britain and Germany - and, to be honest, the girls could be a nuisance too, even in the single sex school, as well as the two boys only classes I taught last year - as we are short of girls in our "Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium". The trouble is the size of the classes. In both Britain and Germany, the classes were equally huge, about 35 kids in each. In Norway, on the other hand, were I spent some time as a student, the classes are much smaller and therefore much easier to handle. Norwegian teachers, however, earn much less money than their British or German counterparts.
Why did you change into teaching?
Well, with me it's easy - I didn't have any other PAID job before - German assistant and substitute teacher in London, substitute job at the Goethe Institut for four months, teaching facts about Germany to kids, and I forgot: tutoring at university during my studies. I did some acting too, but that does not count as I wasn't really paid for playing the German Holocaust survivor in Tadeusz Rozewicz "Card Index" (although I had trained for two years, so I'm not an amateur). But I'm so proud of having been on stage in the *cough* West End. (Very far West End... Borough of Richmond! *ROTFL*) Sounds really good - but I was only paid 20 pounds a night. *Pst, don't tell anybody* :-). So it's only sensible to try and get a proper TEACHING job. I'm an Alan Rickman fan because I envy him his job, see?
BTW: I have a great headmaster - he is absolutely fantastic and so are most of the colleagues. Now to other nicer things: have a look at my Lj again. I've just posted a hilarious video clip.
and finally:
Eem, this is the only reason why I'm a Rickman fan too, of course -- rofl. I'm a happily married woman :) :) :)
That's good to have a great headmaster. A bad headmaster can soooo poison the atmosphere at a school. I've made that experience twice, both in Germany and in Britain. My seminar-school's headmaster is a friendly, modest and outgoing person, thank God.
Just watched the clip... so hilarious!
Yes, I'm happily married, too... and - *uhm* - hubby doesn't even take it as a compliment when I keep telling him that he looks JUST like Alan Rickman did in his late forties (Mesmer-time - noe I just have to boast about this, as always *ROTFL*). (He doesn't think AR so very handsome and takes offense when I point out the similarities - hooded eyes, curved lips, enormous honker, ginger longish hair, skinny... PLUS he's not approaching his fifties, yet. That's the real problem with that compliment - telling a man in his thirties that he looks like Alan Rickman in his fifties... So.... AM I being nice to my husband? ... who is reading this over my shoulder and told me NOT to link to his work-homepage - I will, though, if you delete it quickly. Hubby is vain. Now the next comment you'll get is a rude one by him...:-) Right now he's off to the kitchen, fetching a spoon... No, he's a fan of Alan, too, luckily (he's just stated that he is NOT *ROTFL*), and takes my fandom without much jealousy and knows that he may paper the walls with whichever female star he likes - as long as she's over 60 *LOL*. What about your other half? Is he allowed to read your LJ? Can he cope? :-) I've already read statements like: "Hubby has discovered my LJ - now no more posts about Alan". That's so sad, don't you think so?
No, hubby doesn't read my Lj - why should he? But he accepts my fandom with grace and when a new poster of the OooA arrives he buys a frame for it :)
My dear daughter has reached adulthood, lol, she is 21, *thud* - what did Alan say about time??
