The Long War
by Laurie Lee

Less passionate the long war throws
its burning thorn about all men,
caught in one grief, we share one wound,
and cry one dialect of pain.

We have forgot who fired the house
Whose easy mischief spilled first blood
Under one raging roof we lie
The fault no longer understood
But as our twisted arms embrace the desert where our cities stood
Death’s family likeness in each face must show at last our brotherhood

And I found this comment:

This poems seems horribly ironic since the Pentagon have unveiled their new 'Long War' strategy. £295.6 billion for US defence spending in 2007. Or enough to fund global anti-hunger efforts for the next twelve years. http://costofwar.com/index-world-hunger.html

NO COMMENTS from me...

I've read that the poem is a song of the relatively new Italian band London Underground (debut album in 2000),a trio led by the drummer/vocalist Daniele Caputo who is also known for his work with one of best modern prog bands about STANDARTE:
Line-up/Musicians
- Daniele Caputo / drums, percussion, vocal
- Marco Piaggesi / bass, banjo, backing vocal
- Gianluca Gerlini / piano, Hammond, organ, Moog, clavinet, Mellotron

Additional musicians:
- Claudio Bianchini / pedal steel guitar
- Stefano Cudia / guitar
- Gianni Corongiu / guitar
- Sergio Taglioni / string arrangement

Unfortunately I haven't yet found out much more about them - I'll go to SATURN next week

Ah, Hikity, thank you for finding the poem! I was looking for it too, but somehow I got off on a wrong track and thought it was by a poet named Mark Van Doren.

Teh Poem
Dear Cats, it was a pleasure :) Today Tanja is going to Duesseldorf for some shopping, having a look around in Germany's biggest Music shop SATURN - if she finds anything worthy by London Underground I let you know.

Hello - found yours! Nice page! :-) As I really don't want to discuss pubescent pupils at the guestbook any longer (and bore everyone else to tears...), I'll type my answer here: School psychologists are quite common where I teach (Bavaria). They are teachers with an extra qualification - not REAL psychologists. I once thought of becoming one but as I'm not so very good in dealing with the troublesome kids in my classes, I don't want to specialize in them. Not exactly... Moreover, as a school psychologist you don't really get any regular lessons off (only two per week!)- so it's lot's of strenuous extra work - and as a teacher of German, English and Drama I've already got my work overload...

(You think those kids are different in Australia? Should you find it to be so, send me a note and an application form :-). I found them to be exactly the same in both Britain and Germany - and, to be honest, the girls could be a nuisance too, even in the single sex school, as well as the two boys only classes I taught last year - as we are short of girls in our "Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium". The trouble is the size of the classes. In both Britain and Germany, the classes were equally huge, about 35 kids in each. In Norway, on the other hand, were I spent some time as a student, the classes are much smaller and therefore much easier to handle. Norwegian teachers, however, earn much less money than their British or German counterparts.

Haha, if I ever finish the Ref I'll have a HUGE salary - exactly half of that I used to earn at my last company: the new salary (at least here in NRW) for "angestellte Lehrer am Gymi" is: 2800€ gros - forget about it :)

I now earn 1050, but that's with the family additions, already, and it will be 1700 as an "Assessorin" for the next two years, then StudRin z.A. 2400. Yes, why ARE we doing that job? Surely not for the money. But let's stop de-motivating each other, that's the job of our seminar teachers and heads of school...

Why did you change into teaching?

Well, with me it's easy - I didn't have any other PAID job before - German assistant and substitute teacher in London, substitute job at the Goethe Institut for four months, teaching facts about Germany to kids, and I forgot: tutoring at university during my studies. I did some acting too, but that does not count as I wasn't really paid for playing the German Holocaust survivor in Tadeusz Rozewicz "Card Index" (although I had trained for two years, so I'm not an amateur). But I'm so proud of having been on stage in the *cough* West End. (Very far West End... Borough of Richmond! *ROTFL*) Sounds really good - but I was only paid 20 pounds a night. *Pst, don't tell anybody* :-). So it's only sensible to try and get a proper TEACHING job. I'm an Alan Rickman fan because I envy him his job, see?

good money...lol. Here, 1052 is the basic plus marriage and child bonus, hihi, minus insurance (and no retirement, yeah) I finally have about 700 European bucks in hand, wOw.
BTW: I have a great headmaster - he is absolutely fantastic and so are most of the colleagues. Now to other nicer things: have a look at my Lj again. I've just posted a hilarious video clip.
and finally:
Eem, this is the only reason why I'm a Rickman fan too, of course -- rofl. I'm a happily married woman :) :) :)

Yes, of course minus insurance. So we're equally rich. :-) We don't have children, though (yet).

That's good to have a great headmaster. A bad headmaster can soooo poison the atmosphere at a school. I've made that experience twice, both in Germany and in Britain. My seminar-school's headmaster is a friendly, modest and outgoing person, thank God.

Just watched the clip... so hilarious!

Yes, I'm happily married, too... and - *uhm* - hubby doesn't even take it as a compliment when I keep telling him that he looks JUST like Alan Rickman did in his late forties (Mesmer-time - noe I just have to boast about this, as always *ROTFL*). (He doesn't think AR so very handsome and takes offense when I point out the similarities - hooded eyes, curved lips, enormous honker, ginger longish hair, skinny... PLUS he's not approaching his fifties, yet. That's the real problem with that compliment - telling a man in his thirties that he looks like Alan Rickman in his fifties... So.... AM I being nice to my husband? ... who is reading this over my shoulder and told me NOT to link to his work-homepage - I will, though, if you delete it quickly. Hubby is vain. Now the next comment you'll get is a rude one by him...:-) Right now he's off to the kitchen, fetching a spoon... No, he's a fan of Alan, too, luckily (he's just stated that he is NOT *ROTFL*), and takes my fandom without much jealousy and knows that he may paper the walls with whichever female star he likes - as long as she's over 60 *LOL*. What about your other half? Is he allowed to read your LJ? Can he cope? :-) I've already read statements like: "Hubby has discovered my LJ - now no more posts about Alan". That's so sad, don't you think so?

With "We don't have children, though" I meant my husband and me :-). I've realized that you've got a (teenage?) daughter.

Are you a member of the StudiVZ? Pics from Tanja, Alan, Salmon Rushdie etc up there...

No, hubby doesn't read my Lj - why should he? But he accepts my fandom with grace and when a new poster of the OooA arrives he buys a frame for it :)
My dear daughter has reached adulthood, lol, she is 21, *thud* - what did Alan say about time??
Hugs

We got what we're looking for, so now all we gotta do is get outta here while we still can. OPTIMUS: Well, their attack served its purpose: Megatron is gone.

*waves shy-ly*

hey, sorry to 'pop up' from nowhere but I was wondering if you knew how peek was doing? I hadn't heard from her in ages and I was worried and I do not have an email so I can't contact her directly.

thanks!

Hiya, Lyd, no problem - only I do not remember who you are and where you are from, lol. Thanks very much for asking. We are all very busy these days and Linda has a lot on her sholders. BUT - we are flying to Eastleight tonight and share a room together - so I'll let her know about your mail. She will appreciate your concern and - no doubt - give a life sign next week.
There is still soooooo much to prepare for our short trip - I say good bye for now

I'm the Spanish girl that from ages to ages says 'hi' in claudia's guestbook, the one from Barcelona? Not sure if that rings any bells. I hope you both had an amazing weekend :)
